I am officially on island and what an adventure it has been already.
I left Kansas City at 5:15 AM on Thursday morning with three giant suitcases and a bubble wrapped iMac computer (long story there). First stop: Chicago. Short layover and then on my way to Monetgo Bay. On my flight to Jamaica I got my first glimpse into being a minority. Three and a half hours later and one heck of a time getting through Customs with an iMac, I met my ride and the adventure begins.
They drive on the other side of the road here. It's weird, really weird. I get my car this coming week. I'm nervous about getting behind the wheel. As I said in my Instagram post back here, lines and road signs are more of a suggestion here.
My apartment is very nice. Very clean. Air conditioning is a luxury here. I'm lucky to have an AC unit in my living room but electricity is super expensive so you only run the AC at night when you are sleeping. Have to turn on your water heater about 30 minutes before you want a shower otherwise you'll be taking a very cold shower.
After my apartment, first stop was the grocery store. HOLY. COW. Sticker shock. Everything is about 3x the price of groceries in the U.S.. I mean, we are talking $9 for 6 strawberries. But, the coffee here... incredible.
It's unfortunately been a bit cloudy here the first two days. Yesterday was nice enough to enjoy some time on the beach. I waded in the clear blue water and enjoyed my Red Stripe beer and taking in the culture and people all around me. It was perfect.
Margritaville turns into a club at night and I wanted to check it out. Some work friends and I tore up the dance floor last night. I had so much fun but I was literally the only white girl in the entire place. I have never been that much of a minority before. What an experience!
Stick around for more updates soon. I actually have quite a few posts scheduled from projects I wrapped up before I left, those will be coming out this week or next.
